I undertook an in-depth research project on the feasibility of attracting Integrated Resorts (IRs) to Japan, which included a five-day field investigation in Singapore and five months of analysis back in Japan. My methodology centered on firsthand interviews with Singaporean residents to compare their attitudes toward casinos and public safety with those prevalent in Japan. This data allowed me to formulate a policy-oriented analysis of the challenges and strategic recommendations for Japan's potential adoption of IRs.
My findings indicated that Singapore's residents largely perceive IRs as economically beneficial and express minimal concern about negative impacts on public safety, suggesting the effectiveness of their regulatory framework. This led me to the critical conclusion that Japan must strategically rebrand IRs, shifting the focus from casinos to wholesome, family-friendly destinations. This project was a powerful lesson in the necessity of a multifaceted approach to complex social issues and significantly strengthened my ability to engage in evidence-based policy analysis.
